Issue 2: The High Priestess

The High Priestess looks beyond surface illusions to focus on the inner self. Her keen intuition and connection to spiritual forces help her unfold life's mysteries.

She is the divine feminine, often associated with pomegranates and all of nature's duality, such as the balance between masculinity and femininity or lightness and darkness. The High Priestess represents the subconscious mind and the soul.

We would love for you to submit poems or illustrations inspired by or linked to The High Priestess. This could be anything the words or figure might evoke for you, its meanings both within or without Tarot, or its associated imagery and elements.

Submission Guidelines

General Guidelines:

Poets and artists must be 18+ to submit their works.

Submissions are open internationally, but text must be in English, which includes any words featured in artworks.

Profanity is permitted, but please be sparing and choose your moments wisely.

We will not tolerate prejudice or discrimination against marginalised groups. This is a safe space for all.

Entrants may submit up to 3 poems and/or 3 illustrations per issue but please submit them in separate files titled: (Magazine Issue number) - (Poem/Art Title) - (Your initials). There may be multiple issues accepting submissions at a time so this helps us separate the files correctly while reading submissions.

Please don't include any identifiable information within the files you submit, so they can be read anonymously.

We prefer that the pieces submitted have not been published elsewhere before, either online or in print. This is not a strict rule, but many other magazines or competitions do enforce it, so please write to us if you've been accepted for publication somewhere fancy and would like to withdraw your piece.

No AI generated content is permitted in our magazine. This is a strict rule.

Submissions sent outside of the submission windows for each issue or that disobey our key rules will be ignored.

Illustration Guidelines:

Illustrations must be at least 300dpi, high resolution and fit the dimensions of an A5 page.

Submissions must be monochromatic black to white (which allows for shades of grey so long as they're fully desaturated), but can be in any medium, so long as they are scanned in/photographed to the above specifications.

Due to our aims of making this magazine printable at home, we ask that solid black isn't used as a background or strong majority of the illustration to save our reader's ink costs and prevent bleed through of pages.

Poem Guidelines:

Poems can be up to 40 lines and should be submitted as a Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF document on A5 pages in Georgia font, size 11.

Quotes from public domain works are permitted when used as inspiration but should be referenced, and should only be a small fraction of your poem.

Terms & Conditions

By submitting your art and/or poetry works, you agree you are complying with our submission guidelines above and you fully agree to our Terms & Conditions.

You are able to withdraw your piece at any time during the submission process, which ends once all the issue's pieces have been confirmed by the individual poets and artists.

If your work is selected, we will contact you to confirm that you still wish to be published in the issue of Knights of Pen and Ink you applied for.

That email will be your final chance to withdraw before we move on from the submission process to the issue's publishing process.

After your email response with your confirmation of your continued participation, your work will be officially accepted to the magazine and added to the next issue.

By submitting your work and then agreeing to let us publish it, you are also agreeing to letting your work be downloaded by others in our magazine documents for that issue of the magazine, as well as being printed out into physical copies by our readers at home.

If selected for publication, you agree that we may feature your work in posts on the Knights of Pen and Ink official social media accounts.

You retain full copyright over your artwork and poetry.

Privacy Policy

Outside of your submitted art and poetry works that you give us permission to publish, the personal data we collect will remain private between you and us.

We may collect your name and email during our submission process or subscription to our newsletter/issue updates.

We may use this information to:

- send you a newsletter about our magazine issues and submission deadlines.

- contact you to give you updates on your submission piece(s)

- respond to your questions or concerns

- conduct research and analysis to improve our website and magazine

Please contact us if you wish to withdraw your email and information from our mailing list and records.

We look forward to reading your submissions!

Stay tuned for future submission opportunities too.

If you'd like to get ahead on themes, pick up a classic tarot deck from your local witchy store and have a look through (a Google search works too, but is far less fun). We base our lists on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck but there are plenty of beautifully illustrated versions out there to collect.
